Roberto Martinez quits as Belgium coach after World Cup exit

Image Description
Belgium’s failure to beat Croatia in Group F led Martinez to confirm his exit after six years in charge.

The Belgian media finally got their way when Roberto Martinez chose to resign from his position as Belgium manager after a disappointing tournament. Martinez has been criticized for continuing with older players and not investing in youth.
Belgium were ranked second in the world before this World Cup and with several profiles' last World Cup, this was the last chance for Martinez's project to succeed.

It looks like a generational change in Belgium as several of their players have reached an age where they have to resign, therefore it seems that Martinez would have been fired if he had not chosen to resign himself.

Martinez has had a fantastic time as Belgium coach and he has delivered several great results, a bronze medal at the World Cup 2018 is so far the best result achieved.

Martinez’s all-time stats for Belgium:

Games: 79
Wins: 56
Draws: 13
Losses: 10
Goals scored: 210
Goals conceded: 69
Points: 181
Points per match: 2.29

As you can see, it is not the point average that has made Martinez choose to resign, as 2.29 points per game is above expectations.
Martinez has built up his team throughout his Belgium time and he chose to bet on them this year even though their team age average is very high.

The fact that they have lost only 10 games out of 79 is quite impressive, but the time has come for Belgium to start a completely new project.

Great respect to Martinez for the work he has done for Belgium.
