Julen Lopetegui leaves Wolves shortly before the start of the season.

Julen Lopetegui leaves Wolves shortly before the start of the season.
The reason for his departure is said to be the lack of investments in the squad.

On Monday evening, away against Manchester United, Wolverhampton starts their Premier League season, and it will be without Julen Lopetegui, who has chosen to resign from his position as manager. A surprising and unfavorable start to the new season for Wolves, as they now need to bring in a new manager who will miss the pre-season and thus the familiarity with the playing style and the players. There hasn't been a specific statement from Lopetegui about his departure, but several sources report that it's dissatisfaction with the lack of investment in the squad, especially considering the players that have been sold.

The club has lost key players this summer: captain Ruben Neves to Al-Hilal, Nathan Collins to Brentford, Conor Coady to Leicester, Raul Jimenez to Fulham, and Ryan Giles to Luton Town.
Matheus Cunha has been equipped with a permanent deal after his loan spell at Wolves, Matt Doherty has been acquired on a free transfer from Atletico, and they have also signed Boubacar Traore from Metz. So, it's fair to agree with Lopetegui that there hasn't been enough investment in the squad if they are to be competitive in the upcoming season.

Lopetegui became the manager back in November 2022 when Wolves were struggling around the relegation zone. He managed to turn things around, finishing in 13th place, which is commendable considering the challenges they faced in the first half of the season. Lopetegui had a three-year contract with Wolves, but it ends with only 9 months in charge.

Lopetegui stats for Wolves:
Games: 27
Wins: 10
Draws: 5
Defeats: 12
Goals scored: 31
Goals conceded: 42
Points: 35
Points per match: 1.30

Gary O'Neil, who replaced Scott Parker at Bournemouth last season, is expected to become the new manager at Wolverhampton.
