The top 10 Premier League shot-stoppers this season

Kasper Schmeichel makes a fingertip save from a Mo Salah shot, Liverpool vs Leicester, 10/02/22
A look at the 10 Premier League goalkeepers with the highest save percentages this season.

The Premier League is home to some of the best shot-stoppers in world football and we’re here today to highlight the best of all.

We’ve compiled a list of the top 10 Premier League goalkeepers with the highest save percentage so far this season.

10. Alisson

Kicking things off in 10th place we have Liverpool’s Alisson, who has saved 69.1% of the shots he has faced this season. Liverpool’s defensive blunders were heavily scrutinised last season, but this year has been a return to form for Allison and Liverpool’s backline.

Indeed, Liverpool have conceded just 0.86 goals per game, which is a huge improvement from last season's 1.1 goals conceded per game.

9. Hugo Lloris

Hugo Lloris is a veteran of the Premier League at this point as he is now closing in on 400 appearances for Spurs. The French goalkeeper has had a save percentage of 70.1% this season and has kept eight clean sheets so far.

8. Lukasz Fabianski

The 36-year-old shot stopper often goes under the radar when Premier League goalkeepers are discussed, but he’s been as solid as ever for West Ham this season.

There was a debate at the start of the season as to whether he would still be the Hammers' number one, with the addition of Alphonse Areola from PSG, but Fabianski has once again stepped up to the mark and posted a save percentage of 70.7%.

7. Nick Pope

Despite Burnley currently languishing at the bottom of the Premier League, their defensive stats have actually been fairly reasonable so far. Having only conceded 28 goals, Burnley have the best defensive record of any of the sides in the bottom half and Nick Pope has a 72.5% save percentage.

6. David de Gea

David de Gea has had his fair share of highs and lows at Manchester United, but this season has undoubtedly been a high so far, at least personally. The Spanish goalkeeper has been getting back to his best and has had a save percentage of 72.3%.

Worryingly for Manchester United, though, David de Gea has faced more shots than any other goalkeeper this season, with 112 attempts against him.

5. Ederson

Ederson is arguably the best goalkeeper in the world when it comes to his distribution - and he shows up fairly well in this metric too.

Manchester City currently have the best defensive record in the Premier League, having only conceded 14 goals, and Ederson himself has a save percentage of 73.5%, although it is worth noting that he has faced fewer shots than any other goalkeeper on today’s list.

4. Robert Sanchez

Graham Potter’s side is built upon defensive stability and Robert Sanchez has more than grasped his chance as Brighton’s number one since Matt Ryan’s departure. Sanchez has had a save percentage of 75.9% this season, while also keeping six clean sheets.

3. Aaron Ramsdale

Having joined Arsenal from relegated Sheffield United, the expectations on Aaron Ramsdale weren’t exactly sky-high, but he has more than proved the doubters wrong this season. The 23-year-old has an excellent save percentage of 80.9% and he has also kept 10 clean sheets.

With Jordan Pickford’s stuttering form for Everton, Ramsdale has certainly made a strong case for the England number one spot this year.

2. Edouard Mendy

Edouard Mendy has had a hell of a 12 months, winning the Champions League with Chelsea and being named the best FIFA men's goalkeeper of 2021 before winning AFCON with Senegal for the first time.

Mendy has been one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the league once again this season, having kept eight clean sheets and saving 81% of the shots he has faced.

1. Jose Sa

Filling the boots of Rui Patricio was never going to be easy, but Jose Sa has come in and taken the Premier League by storm so far. The Portuguese goalkeeper has only conceded 16 goals and has contributed towards the second-best defence in the league.

Sa himself has had a staggering save percentage of 84.8%, while also keeping eight clean sheets. After proving himself with Wolves, Sa will no doubt be pushing Rui Patricio for the Portugal number one spot ahead of their World Cup Qualifier next month
