The top 10 underperforming goalkeepers in the Premier League

Hugo Lloris
The Premier League is home to some of the best goalkeepers in the world, but that’s not to say that some of them haven’t been underperforming this season.

We’ve looked into the top 10 underperforming goalkeepers this season based on their xG performance.

10. Alphonse Areola

Alphonse Areola has only played in one Premier League match this season for West Ham and it was against Manchester City to be fair to him.

Erling Haaland put two goals past him and the French goalkeeper has underperformed his xG by 0.9 goals this season.

9. Hugo Lloris

Hugo Lloris didn’t cover himself in glory for the north London derby as Arsenal came out on top with all three points.

The French goalkeeper has been a consistent member of this Spurs side since his arrival in 2012, but he has had his fair share of inconsistencies.

The 35-year-old has an xG underperformance of one goal this season, having conceded 10 goals so far this season.

8. Illan Meslier

Illan Meslier had the biggest underperformance from a goalkeeper last season in the Premier League as he conceded 7.3 more goals than the xG he faced.

At times last season he certainly wasn’t helped out by his backline and how many shots Leeds were facing in each match.

This season the French goalkeeper has had an xG underperformance of one goal.

7. Ederson

Ederson is undoubtedly the best goalkeeper in the league when it comes to distribution, but he does still have his shortcomings.

Man City have looked more vulnerable at the back this season as the likes of Newcastle and Man United have each put three goals past them.

The Brazilian goalkeeper has had an underperformance of 1.3 goals this season.

6. Mark Travers

Mark Travers had a vital role to play in Bournemouth’s promotion bid last season, but the Premier League has been a big learning curve for the goalkeeper.

Neto has replaced Travers as Bournemouth’s new number one as the Irish goalkeeper had an xG underperformance of 1.7 goals this season.

5. Edouard Mendy

There was a point in which Edouard Mendy was considered as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

So far this season he has struggled to get going and due to injury he has missed Chelsea’s recent matches.

This season he has had an underperformance of 1.9 goals in total.

4. David de Gea

Manchester United have a decision to make over David de Gea’s future, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The Spanish goalkeeper has had quite the inconsistent season so far, with his most notable mistakes coming against Brentford.

In total, he has conceded two more goals than his xG would have suggested this season.

3. David Raya

Brentford’s David Raya had a huge role to play in their campaign last season and he actually overperformed his individual xG last time around.

This season hasn’t quite been up to the level of last time as he has had an underperformance of 2.1 goals.

2. Gavin Bazunu

Southampton have only faced an average of 11 shots per game, which is one of the better defensive records in the Premier League.

Despite them limiting the opposition though, Gavin Bazunu has underperformed his xG by three goals this season.

1. Danny Ward

By far and away the biggest goalkeeping underperformance has come from Leicester City’s Danny Ward.

Filling the boots of Kasper Schmeichel was never going to be easy, but Ward has had a nightmare so far.

He has conceded 22 goals already this season and has underperformed his goalkeeping xG by 6.1 goals already.

Daniel Iversen has been patiently waiting for his chance and given Ward’s recent performances, you’d imagine he’ll soon get his chance.
