We’ve dived into the xG numbers and found the top 10 most clinical sides across Europe’s top five leagues, according to xG.
10. Arsenal
Mikel Arteta’s side have enjoyed a consistent start to the season as they currently sit top of the Premier League.
They have overperformed their xG by 3.2 goals, with their biggest xG overperformer being William Saliba who has scored two goals from an xG of 0.3.
9. Spurs
Antonio Conte’s side smashed six goals past Leicester at the weekend and they now rank among Europe’s most clinical sides.
Son Heung-min managed to open his scoring account for the season with a hat-trick against Danny Ward.
Overall, Spurs have scored 16 goals from an xG of 11.7, giving them an overperformance of 4.3 goals.
8. Lille
Jonathan David has been Lille’s biggest xG overperformer this season with five goals from an xG of 3.5.
In total, the French side have out-performed their xG by 4.3 goals this season.
7. Eint Frankfurt
Daichi Kamada and Sebastian Rode both rank within the top 10 Bundesliga players for xG overperformance and so it’s no surprise to see Frankfurt so high up the list.
Frankfurt are the second-biggest German xG overperformers, having scored 14 goals from an xG of 9.7.
6. Brentford
Ivan Toney ranks second in the Premier League for xG overperformance and so Brentford are right up there too.
The Bees have scored 15 goals from an xG of 10.7 and they rank second in the Premier League for clinical ability.
5. Real Madrid
Real Madrid have been the biggest xG overperformers this season in La Liga with a 4.5 goal overperformance.
Vinicius Junior, Federico Valverde and Rodrygo have all stepped up with the goals in the absence of Karim Benzema.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side have won each of their opening six matches in La Liga and they recently came out on top in the Madrid derby.
4. Udinese
Udinese have scored 14 goals from an xG of 9.4 this season and they have been the most clinical side in Serie A.
Lazar Samardzic and Beto both rank among their most clinical players this season as they currently sit third in the table, one point off Napoli at the top.
3. Manchester City
Erling Haaland ranks as the biggest xG overperformer in the Premier League and Pep Guardiola’s side lead the way as the most clinical side in England.
In total, Man City have scored 22 goals from an xG of 15.7 and they have scored more goals than any other Premier League side.
The likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and Julian Alvarez have also out-performed their individual xG this season.
2. Union Berlin
Union Berlin’s xG overperformance has been quite remarkable so far.
The German side have scored a total of 14 goals from an xG of just 5.9, giving them an overperformance of 8.1 goals.
Sheraldo Becker has scored six goals from an xG of 1.1 and he blows everyone else in the Bundesliga out of the water when it comes to clinical ability.
Union Berlin have scored three goals from outside the box and only Bayern Munich have outscored them in the German top flight.
1. Montpellier
Montpellier claim the top spot as the most clinical side from Europe’s top five leagues.
Olivier Dall'Oglio’s side have scored 19 goals from xG of just 9.9, which means they have out-performed their xG by 9.9 goals in total.
PSG are currently the top scorers in Ligue 1 with 26 goals, but Montpellier have actually been the more clinical side.
Montpellier currently sit ninth in Ligue 1 with 12 points after eight matches.
The French side have definitely brought the entertainment factor this season as their games have averaged 4.25 goals per game.
