The stats behind Thomas Tuchel’s time at Chelsea
Chelsea have made the bold call to sack manager Thomas Tuchel just six games into the start of the season.
We’ve explored his time at Chelsea and seen where things have gone wrong for the German manager this season.
2020/21 season
Thomas Tuchel was appointed as Chelsea’s manager on the 26th of January 2021, taking over from Frank Lampard.
In the summer of 2020, Chelsea had spent plenty of money, but the team were underperforming and a change was clearly needed.
When Tuchel came in to Chelsea they were sat ninth in the table and had just lost 2-0 to Leicester City.
Tuchel’s first game in charge of Chelsea saw them play out a goalless draw with Wolves and it was clear that his first objective was to sort out their defence.
Up until he had taken over, Chelsea had conceded 23 goals at an average of 1.2 goals per game.
Tuchel managed to guide Chelsea to a top four finish in his first season with the club, but his greatest success certainly came in the Premier League.
On their way to the final, they beat Atletico Madrid, Porto and Real Madrid.
In the final Chelsea were considered as the underdogs against Manchester City, but Kai Havertz made all the difference with his winning goal.
2021/22 season
On the back of a Champions League triumph, the expectations rapidly raised at Chelsea in their next season.
Chelsea splashed out on Romelu Lukaku and he was expected to make all the difference and contribute towards a title charge.
That didn’t quite happen and Tuchel’s second season in charge saw them finish in third place.
Defensively Chelsea were the third best side in the Premier League last season with only 33 goals conceded.
In the final third was where Chelsea ran into some problems though.
Despite scoring 76 goals and being the third highest scoring side in the league, there seemed to be a reliance on defenders popping up with goals.
Romelu Lukaku didn’t live up to expectations when he arrived back at Stamford Bridge as he scored just eight league goals.
Mason Mount finished the season as the club's top scorer with 11 goals, but this was clearly the area Chelsea needed to improve.
Chelsea averaged 15.6 shots per game last season, with 5.6 of those shots being on target.
2022/23 season
The problems that were rife at Chelsea last season only seemed to be magnified this season.
Once again, Chelsea had plenty of work to do in the transfer window as they signed eight new players and spent over £250million.
This season they have been guilty of giving away high-quality chances to the opposition and they haven’t managed to click in the final third.
Raheem Sterling has scored 37% of Chelsea’s goals in the Premier League so far, but the likes of Kai Havertz and Mason Mount have generally struggled to influence games.
Chelsea had signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a bid to become more threatening in the final third, but he has not yet made his Premier League debut.
Chelsea have averaged 11.7 shots per game, which ranks them 13th in the Premier League for shots taken.
Clearly, Chelsea have been struggling to create consistent goal-scoring opportunities as eight teams have outscored them so far this season.
Throughout the season they have accumulated an xG of 7.6, which is lower than the likes of Crystal Palace, Brentford, Brighton and Leeds.
Perhaps a slow start to the season was always expected though as there has been such a big overturn of players at the club this summer.
Thomas Tuchel has had to pay the ultimate price and now Chelsea will begin their search for their next manager.
