The most clinical teams in Europe's top 5 leagues: PSG, Bayern, Man City
Which of Europe’s elite are the deadliest in front of goal? Here are the top 10 sides with the highest goals per shot ratios.
10) Man City - 13% of shots result in a goal
Remember last summer when City were chasing Harry Kane and they were apparently desperate for a striker?
It seems like a long time ago now.
Despite only having Gabriel Jesus as the only recognised first team striker, Guardiola’s side finished their Premier League campaign with 99 goals and were so close to becoming only the 6th team to score 100 in a season.
It might be surprising to some that they’re even on this list considering the huge amount of chances they create.
The fact a certain Norwegian is on his way through the door makes it all the more frightening.
9) Bayern Munich - 13%
When you’ve got one of the most clinical strikers in the history of football, it was always likely that Bayern would be on this list.
35 goals for Robert Lewandowski in what could be his final season for the Bavarians.
The likes of Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane helped pull their weight as the German giants ended up cruising towards the Bundesliga title, scoring 97 goals along the way.
8) Atletico Madrid - 13%
Considering they’re not the most dominant of sides, Atleti needed to be clinical to maintain their position as a top team in Spain.
Four teams recorded a higher expected goals offensively than Diego Simeone’s squad in La Liga, but they still scored the third most.
Impressive considering their top scorer this season was Angel Correa with 12 goals.
7) Rennes - 14%
Bruno Genesio’s side have been great entertainment in Ligue 1.
Only PSG managed to score more than their 82 in France, with the likes of Martin Terrier being in fine form in front of goal.
Gaetan Laborde and Benjamin Bourigeaud have also had a hand in Renne’s free-scoring antics.
6) Leicester City - 14%
Perhaps a surprise entry for fans of the Premier League.
The Foxes have had a season of regression after challenging for the top four in the previous couple of campaigns.
However, no team outside the Champions League places scored more goals than them and they managed it with the 7th best expected goals offensively in England’s top flight.
5) RB Leipzig - 15%
Interestingly, Leipzig have the 3rd highest expected goals offensively in the Bundesliga, but have scored the 4th most.
That would usually indicate them being slightly wasteful in front of goal but it’s clearly not the case.
It’s perhaps explained by the two German sides higher than them in this list.
Nonetheless, Christopher Nkunku and Andre Silva have both had great seasons up front.
4) PSG - 15%
It’s no surprise a team boasting Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi is good at putting away its chances.
The Parisians won Ligue 1 at a canter and scored 90 goals in the process.
They had the highest expected goals offensively in the division but interestingly; Lyon weren’t far behind in that respect.
It’s a great reminder of why clinical finishers are worth their weight in gold.
3) Lazio - 15%
Only Inter scored more Serie A goals than Maurizio Sarri’s team.
The most remarkable thing is that in terms of expected goals offensively, they were 8th in the league.
It’s a good thing the evergreen Ciro Immobile continues to be one of the best finishers in the world, otherwise they probably would have missed out on European football next season.
2) Bayer Leverkusen - 16%
Die Werkself have had a great season and it’s been in no short part down to the goals they’ve scored.
Patrick Schick has continued his fine form from the Euros and managed a conversion rate of 26% - an astonishing tally for someone who shoots as much as he does.
Meanwhile, Moussa Diaby has stepped up his game significantly and Florian Wirtz has chipped in too.
1) Borussia Dortmund - 16%
Marco Rose’s team scored 85 goals in the Bundesliga.
It’s an impressive tally, but when you consider their expected goals offensively is just 45.1 - it’s staggering how deadly they’ve been in front of goal.
They’ll no doubt have to improve their XG next season, especially since they’re losing the brilliance of Erling Haaland.
The concern is who’s going to step up in his place and whether the remaining squad can still be so clinical.
