The most accurate long-passers in Europe’s top five leagues
We dived into the stats to find out who the top 10 long-passers have been in Europe’s top five leagues this season.
A long pass is defined as a pass which travels more than 30 yards on the pitch.
For the purposes of today’s article, we have excluded goalkeepers and have looked into the best outfield passers.
10. Marco Friedl
Werder Bremen currently sit eight in the Bundesliga and Marco Friedl has been one of their players that’s caught our eye.
He has completed 106 accurate long passes in the Bundesliga this season with a completion rate of 67.9%.
9. Virgil van Dijk
Virgil van Dijk has come under some scrutiny this season after a series of below par performances for Liverpool, but his ability on the ball cannot be questioned.
The Dutch international is a master of switching the play and weighting a long pass from his own half.
The Liverpool defender has completed a total of 107 long passes with a completion rate of 77.5%.
8. Kevin Vogt
Kevin Vogt has been at the base of a Hoffenheim side that have managed to keep things tight at the back this season.
Hoffenheim have only conceded eight goals this season and are currently fifth in the Bundesliga.
Vogt has been their best long passer and has completed 108 long passes with a success rate of 83.1%.
7. Dayot Upamecano
Bayern Munich haven’t really got going this season as they have dropped points in four of their opening eight matches this season.
Dayot Upamecano still manages to rank amongst Europe’s top passers though with 114 accurate long passes this season.
6. Branco van den Boomen
Branco van den Boomen has been the most creative player at Toulouse this season with four assists to his name already this season.
The Dutch midfielder is also excellent at switching play as he has completed a total of 115 long passes this season.
5. Willi Orban
Despite RB Leipzig’s inconsistent start to the season, Willi Orban’s underlying statistics still look fairly consistent.
The 29-year-old has scored two goals this season and has started in all eight of Leipzig’s league matches this season.
Overall, he has completed a total of 118 long balls this season with a success rate of 82.5%.
4. Arthur Theate
Rennes currently find themselves on a good run of form and are now unbeaten across their last five league matches.
Arthur Theate is no stranger to switching the play as he has completed 120 accurate long passes this season with a completion rate of 85.1%, which is higher than anyone else on today’s list.
3. Ruben Neves
Ruben Neves has recently been linked with a move to Barcelona and has been targeted as a potential long-term replacement to Sergio Busquets who is expected to leave at the end of the season.
Neves himself is a class act and he has been a consistent performer in this Wolves side for a number of years now.
In total, he has made 120 accurate long passes, which is more than any other player in the Premier League.
2. Joshua Kimmich
Joshua Kimmich continues to showcase his talent each week for Bayern Munich and he has arguably been their best player this season.
The German international has completed 120 accurate long balls, which is the most of any player in the Bundesliga this year.
1. Johan Gastien – 124
Claiming the number one spot as the most accurate long passer in Europe this season is Johan Gastien of Clermont Foot.
The French midfielder has made 124 accurate long passes this season and has a completion rate of 68.9%.
Clermont Foot currently find temselves in the top half of Ligue 1 and will be hoping to improve on their 17th placed finish last season.
