The highest rated players from Europe’s top five leagues this season
As we are now a month into the 2022/23 campaign, we thought we’d check out the top performers from across Europe so far.
We’ve compiled a team of players with the highest average match ratings, according to Whoscored.
Goalkeeper: Yann Sommer
Yann Sommer broke a Bundesliga record this season by making 19 saves in a single match against Bayern Munich.
In total, Sommer has made 35 saves this season and he has an average match rating of 7.4.
Right back: Benjamin Pavard
Bayern Munich full back Benjamin Pavard has got himself into plenty of goalscoring opportunities this season as he has taken 2.4 shots per game in the Bundesliga.
The Frenchman comes in with an average rating of 7.77 after a series of solid performances this year.
Centre back: Willi Orban
Despite RB Leipzig having conceded nine goals this season, Willi Orban still finds himself as one of the highest rated defenders in Europe.
On average he has won 2.3 tackles and made two interceptions per 90.
The defender has also scored two goals this season and comes in with an average rating of 7.4.
Centre back: Kim Min-Jae
Napoli are going strong in the Serie A at the moment and their defensive sturdiness has had a large role to play in that.
Napoli have only conceded four league goals so far and Kim Min-Jae has proven to be a solid acquisition so far.
The South Korean defender has scored two goals and has an average match rating of 7.5.
Left back: Ramy Bensebaini
The Bundesliga have dominated the back line and Ramy Bensebaini of Borussia Monchengladbach rounds off the back line.
The full back has won an average of four aerial duels per 90 and has an average match rating of 7.5.
Holding midfield: Joshua Kimmich
Joshua Kimmich is arguably the most complete midfielder in Europe right now.
The Bayern Munich midfielder simply does not have a weakness in his game and he has looked just as sharp this season.
Kimmich averages 1.8 shots, 2.5 tackles, 2.2 interceptions, three key passes and six long balls per game.
The German midfielder has an average match rating of 8.0 and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more in-form midfielder right now.
Left midfield: Florian Sotoca
Florian Sotoca of Lens has almost matched his goal tally of six goals from last season already this year.
The Frenchman has scored five goals and got two assists in his first seven matches of the season and he has an average match rating of 7.86.
Right midfield: Kylian Mbappe
Christophe Galtier seems to have perfectly struck the balance at PSG so far this season and Kylian Mbappe has picked up from where he left off last season.
The Frenchman has scored seven league goals in six matches this season and has an average match rating of 8.2 so far this season.
Attacking midfield: Neymar
Right now Neymar is arguably the best player in the world, at least that’s what the stats say.
The Brazilian has scored eight goals and got six assists in seven Ligue 1 matches this season.
His creative numbers continue to be superb as he averages 3.1 key passes per game, but this season Neymar is looking much more ruthless in front of goal.
Striker: Lionel Messi
Competing the PSG trio is Lionel Messi, who has a higher average match rating than any other player in Europe.
Messi took some time to adapt to PSG last season, but the little magician has been getting back to his best this year.
In seven league matches he has 10 goal contributions and has an average match rating of 8.91.
Striker: Erling Haaland
Of course Erling Haaland was going to make it into this team.
It’s only taken him six matches to score 10 Premier League goals and this could very well be the start of a record-breaking season.
The Man City striker has an average match rating of 8.2 and he is the only Premier League player to make it into the side.
