Premier League in March by numbers

Liverpool celebrate their second goal of the game against Arsenal at the Emirates
The Premier League in March saw 32 games played with 90 goals scored, making it one of the most prolific months this season. Liverpool went unbeaten, Tottenham scored the most and Burnley were Burnley

The Premier League had a fairly jumbled month of March, with only two full matchdays being played. The rest of the month was filled with catch up games for teams that lost a gameweek over the Christmas/ New Year period, and the international break at the end of the month.

But that wasn’t a bad thing. It meant that the teams who needed the wins from their catch up games were going for the three points. There was only one goalless draw throughout the whole month from the 32 games played.

That isn’t the only interesting stat of the month, though. Here is how the month looked from some of the major stats.

Goals - 90

90 goals scored over the month is a very high amount, and as mentioned, there was at least one goal scored in 31 of the 32 games played.

Expanding on that, there were only six 1-0 wins. In contrast, there were five games that saw five goals scored in them and six four-goal games.

March was a fantastic month for entertaining football matches.

xG - 83.7

With all the goals scored in the month, it should be no surprise that March turned out to be an overachiever. The cumulative amount of xG from each game of the month came out to 83.7, which is a 6.7 goal difference on the actual number of goals.

Probably the best game in terms of xG from the month goes to Wolves vs Watford. The match ended 4-0 to Wolves, but the xG didn’t go that way. Despite scoring four times, Wolves had a 0.9 xG rate. Not a clue how they got four goals off that rate.

Even funnier is that Watford had the exact same xG rate, and they didn’t manage to get a single goal!

Average number of goals a game - 2.81

As mentioned many times now, it was a fantastic month filled with multi-goal matches. So much so that the average number of goals a game was almost three.

Most goals - Tottenham, 12

Tottenham were always going to attack in March. They had four games in the month, winning three of them and losing the other. A few other teams also played four games in March, due to them needing to catch up, but none were as proficient at scoring as Spurs.

They kicked their month off with a 5-0 win over Everton, which was followed up by their one loss, a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester United.

They bounced right back with a 2-0 win at Brighton, then finished off with a 3-1 win over West Ham.

A mighty fine month for the Lilywhites.

Least goals - Burnley, 0

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have possible relegation-bound side Burnley. They struggled through their three games in March, not able to find the back of the net once.

Starting with a 2-0 loss at home to Leicester, a 4-0 loss to Chelsea was next, again at home. Finally, they lost 2-0 at Brentford to make it eight goals conceded, zero scored in the month of March.

Most clean sheets - Liverpool, 3

Liverpool are on a roll right now in the quest to beat Manchester City to the title. They sustained their campaign with a perfect month, going unbeaten through their three games in March.

Three more wins on their tally has taken their unbeaten streak up to 10 games now, with nine consecutive wins.

It wasn’t an easy month, either. Along with Premier League football, they also had two FA Cup games and their Champions League Round of 16 second leg match against Inter Milan to play, too. That game turned out to be the only match they lost in the month, but we’re talking about the Premier League only here.

They played West Ham first, who beat them in November to end their unbeaten run they were on in the first half of the season. This time, they got the better of them, winning 1-0 at Anfield.

Following that, they went to the AMEX, home of Brighton, who were flying high in the first half of the season, but have since cooled off. The Reds were able to get a 2-0 win over them.

And finally, they visited the Emirates to take on Arsenal, who were looking to make the most of every one of their catch up games to give them an advantage in the race for fourth place.

Liverpool didn’t care though, as they dispatched of the Gunners, beating them 2-0 and solidifying their perfect Premier League month
