The top 10 most clinical Premier League sides
The Premier League is home to some of the best forwards in world football, but which teams are converting the highest percentage of their shots on goal?
10. Arsenal
Coming in at 10th place we have Arsenal, who have converted 7.7% of their shots on goal this season. Several Arsenal players have exceeded their individual xG so far, particularly Emile Smith Rowe, who has scored eight goals from an xG of just 3.6.
9. Everton
It may come as a surprise to see Everton in the top 10, especially considering they currently find themselves as the seventh lowest-scoring Premier League side with just 24 goals. But they actually have a conversion rate of 7.8%.
Everton’s main problem has been with actually creating chances, as they have taken just 307 shots this season in total – the fourth lowest in the Premier League. Thanks to some of their midfielders exceeding their individual xG, they make it into the top 10 on this list.
8. Manchester United
Manchester United are next on the list with a conversion rate of 8.8%. Their top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo has actually just underperformed against his xG so far with eight goals from an xG of 9.2. But, on the flip side, Bruno Fernandes has exceeded his xG by 2.4 goals this season.
7. Crystal Palace
Patrick Viera’s side show up quite well on this metric, with a conversion rate of 9%. Their main goal threat, Conor Gallagher, has also been their most creative player this season with 31 key passes. Gallagher himself has exceeded his xG by 2.7 goals.
6. Aston Villa
Aston Villa rank among the lowest for shots taken this season, with just 307 attempts on goal. But they have been fairly clinical with a conversion rate of 9.1%. Steven Gerrard will be hoping that the additions of Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne will add some much-needed creativity to the side.
5. Manchester City
Manchester City rank second for shots taken with 559 attempts and they have a conversion rate of 9.8%. This combination has seen Pep Guardiola’s side score 55 goals this season, an average of 2.4 goals per game.
4. West Ham
The Hammers rank fourth on this list with an impressive conversion rate of 10%. Coinciding with this, West Ham are currently the fourth-highest scoring side in the league with 41 goals.
Top scorers Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen have scored 34% of the Hammers' Premier League goals this season.
3. Chelsea
Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea side have the third-highest conversion rate in the league with 10.2% of their shots resulting in a goal. Despite Romelu Lukaku not quite finding his feet so far, Chelsea are also the third-highest scoring side this season and have averaged two goals a game.
Amazingly, 31% of Chelsea’s goals have been scored by defenders.
2. Liverpool
Liverpool are leading the way for goals scored in the Premier League with 58 and they have been the second most clinical side in the league with a 10.3% conversion rate. Mo Salah has scored 16 of those goals and he has exceeded his xG by 3.5 goals.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have taken more shots than anyone else this season with 563 and they have averaged 2.6 goals per game.
1. Leicester City
It may surprise you to learn that Leicester have actually been the most clinical side this season, with a conversion rate of 10.8%. The Foxes have struggled to keep pace with the top four and currently find themselves 10th in the league.
Leicester rank just 14th for the most shots taken with just 316 attempts on goal, but when a chance does come around, they tend to take it. Jamie Vardy, James Maddison and Youri Tielemans have all exceeded their individual xG and have chipped in with 20 of Leicester’s goals.
