Mohamed Salah has now moved level with Michael Owen on Liverpool’s all-time top goalscorer list - but how do their records compare?

Owen came through Liverpool’s academy and made his senior debut in May 1997 before enjoying an outstanding breakthrough season in 1997-98.

Despite struggling with a few injury problems, the striker continued to impress over the following few seasons and helped Liverpool win the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup in 2000-01.

His performances in 2001 saw hm receive the Ballon d’Or award, making him the first Liverpool player to receive the prestigious trophy.

But Owen’s time at Liverpool came to an end in the summer of 2004 when Real Madrid signed the former England international for £8million.

Salah, meanwhile, had spells at Basel, Chelsea, Fiorentina and Roma before joining the Reds in a £34million move in 2017.

The Egypt international exceeded all expectations during a record-breaking debut season and has played a key role in Liverpool’s success in recent years, establishing himself as one of the best players in the world.

“His mentality stands out,” Owen told BT Sport when asked about Salah earlier this year. “He doesn’t care about anything else bar records and scoring goals.

“It’s his obsession as a person, and he has developed that over time. He wasn’t a goal machine earlier on in his career, but he has got better and better.

“I still think there are areas of his game where he could score more goals. You can see that he wasn’t a goal machine earlier in his career as he hasn’t perfected some of the arts.

“But what he has perfected is outrageously good. Now he’s got a taste for it, he doesn’t want to let go.”

We’ve taken a look at their overall stats in a Liverpool shirt to see who comes out on top.
