Euro weekend round-up: Yann Sommer masterclass, Liverpool hit nine

Yann Sommer
Plenty has happened this weekend across Europe and we’ve looked into some of the biggest talking points from around Europe.

Yann Sommer stops Bayern

For the first time this season, Bayern Munich have dropped points in the Bundesliga as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach.

Bayern had scored seven goals in their last game, but Yann Sommer was in inspired form to stop them this weekend.

Incredibly the Swiss goalkeeper made 19 saves in total, with 11 of those saves coming from shots inside the box.

In total, Bayern took 33 shots and had 20 of them on target.

In their first four matches, Bayern have averaged an incredible 25.5 shots per game, which is far more than any other side.

The German champions accumulated an xG of 3.16, but were only able to find the back of the net once.

Sommer is now the biggest Bundesliga goalkeeper overperformer this season as he has prevented an xG of 2.3 goals across his first four matches of the season.

Liverpool hit nine

Liverpool had struggled to find their flow in their first three Premier League matches, but they were back to their best against Bournemouth this weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s side put nine goals past Bournemouth and they will be hopeful that this is a sign of things to come.

Only Manchester City have taken more shots per game than Liverpool have and this time their attacking prowess made all the difference.

Liverpool have averaged 17.8 shots per game during this Premier League season and against Bournemouth they managed to accumulate an xG of 3.91.

Since beating Aston Villa on the opening day, Bournemouth have had a tough run of fixtures against Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Scott Parker’s side have been susceptible to conceding a high volume of shots as they face 16.8 shots on average each game, which is the second highest in the Premier League.

Next up for Bournemouth is a home game against Wolves in midweek where they will look to get back to winning ways.

Haaland hat-trick

Was there ever any doubt that Haaland wouldn’t score goals in the Premier League?

Crystal Palace have proven themselves to be a tough test for Man City in years gone by and when they were 2-0 up, Man City fans would have been fearing the worst.

The difference in their set-up this season though is Erling Haaland who has ice running through his veins.

The Norwegian striker already leads the way in the Premier League for goals scored with six goals in his opening four Premier League matches.

Only Aleksandar Mitrovic has taken more shots than Haaland so far this season, as the Man City man has taken 18 shots in total, with 17 of those coming from inside the box.

City are averaging 3.25 shots per game and next up is a game against Nottingham Forest, who have faced more shots than any other side this season.

Roma frustrate Juventus

Paulo Dybala played his role in Roma’s 1-1 draw with Juventus this weekend as he assisted Tammy Abraham’s second half equaliser.

The assist was Dybala’s first goal contribution of the season and he will be hoping this is the first of many to come.

Despite having less of the ball and fewer shots, Roma actually produced a better xG throughout the match and had the better chances.

They accumulated an xG of 1.22, compared to Juventus having just 0.48.

Roma and Juventus are both unbeaten after their opening three matches of the season, but Juventus have already drawn two matches.

Last season they drew 10 matches, which was more than any other side in the top four.

If Massimiliano Allegri’s side wants to challenge for the title this season, they will need to start turning some of these draws into wins.
