Euro weekend round-up: Real Madrid win derby, Napoli stay top
With plenty happening this weekend across Europe, we’ve dived into the stats to analyse some of the talking points.
Real win Madrid derby
Real Madrid managed to maintain their perfect start to their La Liga season with all three points away at Atletico Madrid.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side have now each of their opening six matches and they currently have a two point lead over Barcelona at the top of the table.
In the derby it was Real Madrid who just about edged the xG with 1.19 to Atletico’s 0.98 and that was enough to secure a 2-1 win.
In the absence of Karim Benzema, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and Federico Valverde started as Real’s front three and they all had their role to play.
Rodrygo and Valverde scored each of Real’s goals to give them a 2-0 lead before half time.
During the second half, chances were at a premium as Real were happy to defend their two-goal lead.
Mario Hermoso pulled a goal back for the home side, but he was later sent off in the match and Atletico couldn’t find an equaliser.
Atletico have had a frustrating start to their league campaign as they have dropped points in three of their opening six matches and currently sit seventh in the table.
Barcelona keep another clean sheet
There have been plenty of plaudits given to Barcelona’s front line this season and rightly so.
Xavi’s side have scored 18 goals across their opening six matches and they put three goals past Elche this weekend.
Robert Lewandowski scored a first half brace and Memphis Depay scored his first half of the season to round off an impressive 3-0 win.
Arguably the most impressive element of this Barcelona side though is their defensive stability.
So far they have only conceded one league goal and they have kept five clean sheets already.
Elche only managed to register one single shot against Barcelona throughout the entire match.
Barcelona have done well to limit the opposition to a relatively low xG in each gameweek. Across their opening six matches, they have conceded an xG of only 3.5.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen has had the second biggest goalkeeping overperformance in La Liga this season, with a total of 2.5 goals prevented.
Napoli stay top of Serie A
Napoli faced their toughest test of the season so far away at AC Milan and they managed to leave the San Siro with all three points.
Goals from Matteo Politano and Giovanni Simeone were enough to seal the three points as Napoli picked up a 2-1 win.
Luciano Spalletti’s side managed to grind out the win, despite Milan having the better chances.
Milan accumulated an xG of 2.25, compared to Napoli’s 1.18.
Stefano Pioli’s side hit the woodwork twice and took a total of 22 shots to Napoli’s nine.
The loss was Milan’s first of the season and saw them drop down to fifth in the table.
Kevin De Bruyne at his best
Kevin De Bruyne has been a joy to watch for Man City this season and he added a further two assists to his tally this weekend against Wolves.
Jack Grealish opened the scoring with his first goal of the season and De Bruyne excellently assisted him from the right-hand side.
Erling Haaland scored his 11th league goal of the season with his first Premier League goal from outside the box.
Phil Foden sealed the 3-0 victory with another goal which was assisted by De Bruyne.
In total, the Belgian playmaker made four key passes and completed two accurate crosses.
Next up for Pep Guardiola’s side is a Manchester derby at the Etihad, after the International break.
