Euro weekend round-up: Pep v Klopp, Atletico stumble, Neymar brilliance
What a weekend of football we have just had, Manchester City and Liverpool locked horns at the Etihad, Mbappe and Neymar both hit hat-tricks in the same game and Atletico Madrid stumbled in La Liga.
We’ve dived into the stats from the weekend to give you a round-up of all you need to know from around Europe.
Man City v Liverpool
The Premier League certainly didn’t disappoint this weekend as we were treated to a four goal thriller between Manchester City and Liverpool.
Having taken the lead twice, City would have perhaps been the more disappointed side to have not won, although the point does leave them in the driving seat heading into the final few weeks of the season.
Liverpool did manage to craft out three big chances, compared to Manchester City’s two, but there really was no separating these two sides.
Man City just about edged to xG by 1.31 to Liverpool’s 1.14.
Both sides will now gear up for their midweek Champions League ties, with everything still to play for in the Premier League.
MNM hitting form
It would be a shame if the Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Leo Messi trio is broken up next season because it finally feels like they are starting to build up some chemistry with each other.
Last week each of them scored in the same game for the first time and this weekend they were even more dazzling.
Both Neymar and Mbappe hit hat-tricks as well as Messi providing a hat-trick of assists as they swept Clermont Foot aside by six goals to one.
After his hat-trick in this one as well as an assist, Mbappe now leads the way in Ligue 1 for both goals and assists with 34 goal contributions in 28 appearances.
Mbappe has averaged a goal or assists every 71 minutes in the French League this season.
PSG now need just three more wins to clinch the league title and next up is a tasty looking tie against Marseille, who are currently 12 points behind them in second place.
After a frustrating start to the season, Neymar is finally starting to find his feet once again as he now has eight goal contributions in his last five matches.
Atletico Madrid stumble
Atletico Madrid’s top four chances took another blow this weekend as they fell to a disappointing 1-0 loss at RDC Mallorca.
Diego Simeone perhaps had one eye on their midweek meeting with Manchester City as he made three changes for the weekend.
Atletico are still in the driving seat for a top four finish, although Real Betis are now just one point behind them after their away win at Cadiz.
Diego Simeone’s side had been on a six game winning streak in La Liga before the weekend, but they looked particularly blunt in this game.
They managed to accumulate an xG of just 0.58 and they only managed one shot on target throughout the game.
All their focus will now be on overturning Manchester City in the second leg of their Champions League tie, but they will need to be significantly better than they were this weekend.
Free-scoring Spurs
After another stumble from Arsenal this weekend, Spurs are showing no signs of letting off in this year's top four race.
Antonio Conte’s side have now made it four wins on the bounce and they have scored an impressive 14 goals across those matches.
Harry Kane was once again the provider for Heung-min Son who netted a hat-trick and he is now just three goals behind Mohamed Salah in the golden boot race.
England’s captain produced four key passes throughout the afternoon and he will now have his sights set on double figures for assists as he currently sits on eight for the season, alongside 12 goals.
Antonio Conte has managed a 58% win ratio since arriving in North London and Spurs now sit three points ahead of Arsenal, having played an extra game.
