Euro weekend round-up: Juventus comeback, Real Madrid’s Brazilian flair
From a dramatic Juventus comeback to Bayern Munich being held to another draw in the Bundesliga, we’ve picked out some of the major talking points from this weekend across Europe.
Bayern held to another draw
Bayern Munich have averaged 23.7 shots per game so far this season, which is 8.5 more shots than any other Bundesliga side.
Despite their attacking prowess, Bayern have had a somewhat frustrating start to the season as they were held to their third draw of the season this weekend.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side remain unbeaten, but they have now dropped points in half of the games they have played this season.
Stuttgart managed to foil them this weekend with a 92nd minute penalty which levelled the game up at 2-2.
Mathys Tel and Jamal Musiala provided the two goals for Bayern, but Stuttgart fired back after falling behind twice in the game.
Matthijs de Ligt was guilty of conceding the late penalty and the point saw Bayern fall to third in the table.
Bayern dominated the ball with 67% of possession and had 19 shots in total, but their dominance ultimately didn’t matter as they made some sloppy mistakes at the back.
Next up for the German side is a Champions League game against Barcelona and a meeting with their former star man, Robert Lewandowski.
Juventus comeback
In perhaps the most dramatic game of the season so far, Juventus came back from two goals behind against Salernitana and they thought they had the game won at one point.
The game was full of twists and turns and tensions ran high throughout the game.
In total, the referee dished out six yellow cards and four red cards, including Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri being sent off.
Juventus had more of the ball in the first half with 62% possession, but Salernitana punished them twice with two goals before half time.
In the second half, Allegri wasted no time in making five substitutions and the changes had the desired effect.
Juventus had only taken five shots in the first half and in the second half they took a total of 18 shots, six of them being on target.
Salernitana’s goalkeeper Luigi Sepe was kept busy throughout the second half as Juventus peppered their goal with shots and eventually their quality paid off.
Filip Kostic assisted Bremer for the first Juventus goal and Leonardo Bounucci popped up with a 93rd minute equaliser.
The controversy came in the 96th minute when Arkadiusz Milik popped up with the winning goal, only for VAR to rule out the goal and the referee show him a second yellow card for his celebration.
Salernitana managed to hold on to the point in the end and Juventus fell to seventh in the table.
Massimiliano Allegri’s side have now drawn four of their opening six matches and they are already for points off Napoli who currently sit top.
Real Madrid’s Brazilian flair
Real Madrid’s Brazilian stars grabbed the headlines over the weekend as Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior both put in starring performances against RCD Mallorca.
Real Madrid have started the season well and currently sit top of La Liga with 15 points after five games have been played.
Their hot streak continued this weekend as they beat RCD Mallorca 4-1 at home.
Karim Benzema went off injured in Madrid’s Champions League game against Celtic in midweek and was missing for this weekend’s game.
In his absence, Eden Hazard played as a false nine, with Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior to either side of him.
Rodrygo scored and assisted a goal and completed seven successful dribbles throughout the match and provided three key passes.
Vinicius Junior scored Madrid’s second goal of the game and completed eight dribbles.
Next up for Carlo Ancelotti’s side is a game against RB Leipzig on Wednesday night in the Champions League.
