Euro weekend round-up: CR7 hits 700 goals, Dortmund last minute drama

Cristiano Ronaldo
Plenty happened this weekend across Europe and we’ve dived into the stats to pick out some of the best talking points.

Cristiano Ronaldo hits 700 goals

Cristiano Ronaldo had struggled to get going this season, but he hit his first Premier League goal of the season this weekend.

Coincidentally, the strike was his 700th club goal of his career and was quite the landmark moment.

The 37-year-old has now scored five goals for Sporting, 101 for Juventus, 144 for Man United and 450 for Real Madrid.

Ronaldo started the game against Everton on the bench, but was introduced as a first half substitute following an injury to Anthony Martial.

Six of his seven appearances in the Premier League this season have come from the bench, but perhaps he will have a bigger part to play with Martial now injured.

Casemiro also had a notable performance as he set up Ronaldo’s 700th goal with a well weighted through-ball.

The Brazilian midfielder broke up the play well and made four tackles as well as four clearances.

United’s win pushes them up to fifth in the table, one point outside of the top four.

Dortmund leave it late

Borussia Dortmund managed to come back from two goals behind to draw 2-2 with Bayern Munich this weekend.

Bayern have had a frustrating season up until this point as they have dropped points in five of their opening nine matches.

They had started well against Dortmund though as goals from Leon Goretzka and Leory Sane saw them go two goals up within 53 minutes.

The introduction of Anthony Modeste seemed to be the turning point for Dortmund though as he set up Youssoufa Moukoko before scoring the equalising goal in the last minute.

The French forward only had six touches of the ball, but he was still able to massively influence the result of the game.

Bayern have scored more goals than any other Bundesliga side this season and are averaging 2.77 goals per game.

Despite being so prolific in front of goal though, they have had a somewhat stuttering start to the season.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side currently sit third in the Bundesliga and are four points off Union Berlin who are currently leading the way in the league.

Dortmund sit just below Bayern on goal difference as they have also picked up 16 points from their opening nine matches.

Arsenal edge past Liverpool

Liverpool’s defensive problems were magnified against Arsenal as Mikel Arteta’s side ran out as 3-2 winners.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have now conceded six goals in their last two Premier League matches and they currently sit 10th in the league.

Arsenal’s attacking threats were well established coming into the game and Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka especially caused all sorts of problems.

Martinelli opened the scoring after just 58 seconds as Liverpool were first to concede once again in the Premier League.

This season Liverpool have had an xG against them of 1.36 per 90, which has dramatically shot up from the 0.89 xG they were facing last season.

Injuries haven’t helped their current situation, but Klopp will need to find an answer sooner rather than later if he is to salvage their season.

Saka was another of Arsenal’s bright sparks throughout the afternoon as his brace wrapped up the three points for the home side.

Arsenal have reclaimed their spot at the top of the Premier League and are currently one point better off than Man City.

Arteta’s side have averaged 2.66 points per game, which if they managed to maintain over a full season they would accumulate 101 points.

Next up for Arsenal in the Premier League is a game against Leeds United where they will be looking to continue on their impressive run.
