Analysing the race for the Serie A title this season

Olivier Giroud
The Serie A hasn’t disappointed so far this season and we’ve analysed all of the potential title winners this year.

Napoli

Luciano Spalletti’s side currently sit top of Serie A with 17 points from their opening seven matches.

Napoli were involved in the title race last season, but they ultimately fell short at the end of the season and finished in third place.

This season they have scored an average of 2.14 goals per game and they have also kept things tight at the back.

On average they have taken 19.3 shots per game, which is more than any other side in the league and they also top the list for pass accuracy with 87.1%.

Atalanta

Atalanta have been the best defensive unit in the league this season, having only conceded three goals so far this season.

Teun Koopmeiners has been their main man so far as he has contributed towards five of their 11 goals.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side finished last season in eighth place and they could be on for an improvement this time around.

They currently sit second in the table on 17 points and are only behind Napoli on goal difference.

Udinese

Udinese have been a lot of fun this season and they currently sit seventh in the Serie A.

Andrea Sottil’s side have averaged 2.14 goals per game and they have had notable results against Inter and Roma so far.

Their 4-0 hammering of Roma made everyone take a step back and take this side seriously this season.

They have looked much sharper than last season and will be hopeful of an improvement on their 12th placed finish from last season.

Lazio

Lazio just missed out on Champions League football last season as they finished in fifth place, having averaged 1.68 points per game.

This year they have averaged two points per game and are currently on course for a top four finish.

Maurizio Sarri’s side also have one of the best defensive records in the league, having only conceded five goals thus far.

They only rank 17th in the league when it comes to shots per game with 11, but they have been clinical with taking their chances so far.

AC Milan

Last season’s champions are always going to be in with a shot of retaining their title.

AC Milan have picked up 14 points from their opening seven matches and are only three points off the top as things stand.

They did come out on top in the Milan derby a few weeks ago too in a dramatic 3-2 victory.

Stefano Pioli’s side have averaged 17.1 shots per game and only conceded 10.1 shots on average.

Olivier Giroud and Rafael Leao have each started the season well and they will have big roles to play in their title defence.

Last season they averaged 2.26 points per game and won the league with 86 points.

Roma

Jose Mourinho’s Roma have had an up-and-down start to their 2022/23 campaign so far. They fell to a disappointing 4-0 loss to Udinese, but have had some notable results themselves this season.

They have averaged 16.6 shots per game, but their biggest problem has been hitting the back of the net.

They have only scored eight goals so far, which is the lowest of any of the current top eight clubs.

62.5% of their goals this season have been scored by Tammy Abraham and Paulo Dybala, but they could do with a few more players chipping in with the goals.

Inter

Inter pushed AC all the way in last season's title race and they currently rank with the top scorers in the league.

Simone Inzaghi’s side have scored 13 goals in their opening seven matches and have scored in each of their matches this season.

The problems they have been facing have come down to their defence. Inter have conceded an average of 1.57 goals per game, will be a concern.

Juventus

Juventus have been off the pace for quite some time now and they still haven’t really got going this season.

With all of the talent they possess in the squad, you would be foolish to completely rule them out of a title race though.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side have drawn four of their opening seven matches of the season and they will need to turn some of those into wins if they want to be in the title race this season.
