The most clinical players in the Championship

The Championship is known for being a breeding ground for attackers to thrive and last season was no different.

We’ve compiled a list of the top 10 most clinical players from last season, based off their goals per shot ratio (minimum 30 shots). 

 

10. Jamie Paterson  

Swansea’s Jamie Paterson is coming off the season of his career as Russel Martin got the 30-year-old back to his best. 

Paterson chipped in with nine goals and had a goals per shot ratio of 0.20. 

 

9. Joël Piroe 

Swansea’s second entry onto the list is Joël Piroe who had quite the debut season in Wales. 

He scored 22 goals during his first season and so it’s been no surprise to see several Premier League clubs interested in the Dutch forward. 

Piroe is fairly versatile as he has been utilised as a traditional number nine as well as a number 10 and he has an impressive goals per shot ratio of 0.20. 

 

8. Matt Crooks  

Generally speaking, Middlesbrough’s front line struggled for consistency last season and it was actually midfielder Matt Crooks who was their best goal threat. 

He scored 10 goals from midfield and had a goals per shot ratio of 0.21. 

 

7. Scott Hogan  

Birmingham were amongst the lowest scoring Championship sides last season and so Scott Hogan did well to get into double figures for a goal return. 

He averaged a goal every 229 minutes and had a goals per shot ratio of 0.22. 

 

6. Harry Cornick 

Elijah Adebayo got plenty of the plaudits last season for Luton, but Harry Cornick’s supporting role in the side certainly shouldn’t go under the radar. 

The 27-year-old scored 12 goals and had a goals per shot ratio of 0.22. 

 

5. Tom Bradshaw  

Millwall’s Tom Bradshaw had an excellent goal return last season considering the minutes he played. 

He averaged a goal every 150 minutes and was Millwall’s most clinical player with a goal per shot ratio of 0.23. 

 

4. Andre Gray  

Andre Gray spent the season on loan at QPR and he had a decent goalscoring record to boast as he averaged a goal every 122 minutes. 

The majority of his appearances were from the bench and he did well to make an impact with a goals per shot ratio of 0.24. 

 

3. Michael Obafemi 

Swansea’s third and final entry onto the list comes in the form of Michael Obafemi who especially came into life in the second half of the season. 

Once the 21-year-old cemented his place in the starting 11, he wasted no time in delivering the goods. 

Obafemi was Swansea’s most clinical player with a goals per shot ratio of 0.24 as he ended the season with 12 goals. 

 

2. Jack Marriott  

Jack Marriott will be playing in League One next season with Peterborough, but he was actually one of the most clinical players in the Championship last season. 

Marriott has generally struggled for fitness over the past few seasons and he only managed 16 starts in the 21/22 campaign, although he still managed to be Peterborough’s most clinical player. 

The 27-year-old had a goal per shot ratio of 0.26 and ended the season with nine goals. 

 

1. Andreas Weimann 

Claiming the number one spot as the most clinical player in the Championship last season we have Bristol City’s Andreas Weimann. 

Weimann has often been a usual player because of his versatility, but this season he took his game to another level when it comes to his goal output. 

The Austrian forward scored 22 goals as well as chipping in with 11 assists. 

He was an ever-present member of Bristol City’s formidable attacking trio alongside Chris Martin and Antoine Semenyo. 

Weimann’s goal per shot ratio of 0.27 ranks him as the most clinical player from last season and Bristol City fans will be hoping for a similar output next season.
