Recap of last night (Jan 2) - Donovan Mitchell 71 point game
71 points for Spida, 44 for DeRozan, 54 for Klay, and LeBron with a back to back 40
January 2nd was no particular night if you don't watch basketball, but last night history was made. Let me see you in the night.
First off that bat, the Nets and the Trail Blazers settle for a comfortable win (Nets vs Spurs, and Blazers vs Pistons). Both teams needed it, the Nets to maintain a high position on the table, and the Trail Blazers so as not to fall further in the conference. We've seen the Warriors and Lakers not being able to push forward and up the conference ladder since game 1 of the regular season, as well as the Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz falling from grace after a terrific start to the season. The Trail Blazers are off to the right start in 2023 to make it out of the play-ins and secure a playoff spot.
Speaking of the Warriors, the Dubs can't seem to find a way out of the bottom table, the current champions have been healthy but not ready to go since day 1. Still struggling to get significant away wins, Golden State is riding on their home wins, which I'm sure the fans love for the most part. Last night was no different than the others, with the Warriors taking a win over the Hawks at Chase Center in a grueling game to double overtime, with the Warriors winning by 2. Atlanta finds themselves in the same position as the dubs in the eastern conference , hopefully their young squad can get them out of the play-in contention.
Finally, January 2nd's game day included one of the best performances in recent NBA history. Donovan Mitchell scoring a 71 point double double to beat Devin Booker's record, matching a prime Wilt Chamberlain AND David Robinson statline! That night, Donovan Mitchel was 2 rebounds short of completing the first ever 70 point triple double. On top of that, Donovan Mitchell went up against a Bulls team with a 44 point DeRozan on it.
Only a week after Luka Doncic's historic game vs the Knicks, Mitchell found himself in a similar situation, in overtime with 3 points to even the game. Mitchell missed a free throw on purpose to then catch it back and get a bucket for the equaliser, and sends the game to overtime. Kudos!
